History of Afternoon Tea
Anna Maria Russell, Duchess of Bedford (1783–1857), is considered the originator of afternoon tea. She was a lady-in-waiting to Queen Victoria. During this time, lunch was apparently becoming increasingly scant, leading to the noble lady being plagued by intense hunger between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. Initially, she secretly enjoyed small meals, but later she invited other ladies-in-waiting to her chambers for an additional afternoon snack. This snack was so successful that it was eventually adopted by her guests. Thus, afternoon tea was born.
